According to Gizmodo, you can upgrade to iOS 5 without an Apple Developer’s Account; but after delving on the web further, it seems the process described on their page doesn’t work. It doesn’t activate your phone, rather turns it into a brick!!

To upgrade your iOS device to iOS 5, you’ll need to register your device UDID with

Apple. If you’ve a friend who’s a registered Apple Developer, you can ask him to add your device UDID through his account; if not, you can pay someone to do it for you. Price goes from around $5 to $10. iMDZL, Activate My UDID, iOS UDID Registrations etc are some websites where you can buy your UDID activation. I can not guarantee their legitimacy however I did mine with iMDZL successfully!!

If you own a Mac, there’s no worry and you can go ahead with the upgradation but if you own a Windows PC, iMDZL FAQs says it is not supported. However, I upgraded mine on a Windows system so as some others, and my iPhone 4 is working fine.

Tools needed
1) iTunes 10.5 Beta & iOS 5 Firmware (Download from here or here)
2) TinyUmbrella (Download) [I needed TinyUmbrella as error 3194 showed up. In some cases, it may not be needed.]

Steps:

1) Make sure you’ve installed iTunes 10.5 beta downloaded from the link above and you’ve the iOS 5 firmware ready with you.

2) Connect your iPhone and shift+click (left ‘alt’ + click on Mac) on the restore button.

3) Select the iOS 5 firmware downloaded earlier and follow the prompts. Your device will be upgraded automatically.

However, after the 3rd step if you see an Error 3194 (This device is not eligible for the requested build) you’ll need TinyUmbrella to deal with it. Open TinyUmbrella and uncheck “Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit” in the ‘Advance Tab’. (By default it is checked)

Now, you can close TinyUmbrella and continue the restore process above. It should’ve fixed the problem.

However, if the error persists, you can try other ways to fix the error. Another method is to edit the windows hosts file (although it seem to worked for some people, it didn’t worked for me that’s why I asked you to use TinyUmbrella). Instead of using TinyUmbrella, run Notepad as administrator and open the ‘hosts’ file from the location ”C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc”.

Notice the last two lines. The lines may be different in your system. (# is commenting the line out)

#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
#74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Remove the ‘#” out from the second line. If the second line is missing, just add it so that the last two lines look like

#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Now save the file. (You won’t be able to save the file unless you run notepad as an aministrator).

Now go to iTunes>Help>Run Diagnostics…

We are interested in the “Network Connectivity Test” so uncheck all the others and click next.

Make sure all the results are green (successful). If not, make sure you’ve made the proper changes in the ‘hosts’ file and try restarting.

I hope this helps. The device baseband (Modem Firmware) upgraded from 4.10.01 to 4.11.06.

Enjoy the ‘Most powerful mobile OS in the world’!!
